Argentine Open – Day 4

Cria La Dolfina and Ellerstina Earn Victories in Argentine Open

Capping off the first weekend of play in the Argentine Open at Palermo, Cria La Dolfina (Guillermo Terrera, Tomas Panelo, Diego Cavanagh, Alejo Taranco) met La Esquina (Pascual Sainz de Vicuña, Cristina Laprida, Lucas James, Ignacio Laprida), as Cria La Dolfina doubled their opponents in shots with six goals from leading scorer Cavanagh to capture the 9-5 win.

Sunday’s second match featured Ellerstina (Facundo Pieres, Hilario Ulloa, Gonzalo Pieres, Nicolas Pieres) against La Irenita Clinova (Facundo F. Llorente, Tomas F. Llorente, Bautista Bayugar, Isidro Strada), as a dominant first half saw Ellerstina go seven for fourteen to seize a commanding lead that would withstand the remainder of the match for a convincing 16-8 victory.

Assembling on Field 2, Cria La Dolfina’s Terrera kick-started the scoring from the field, as Cavanagh hit two of three early penalty attempts to give his team a 4-1 edge. Managing just one goal on three shots in the first two chukkas of play, La Esquina were back on their heels as Cavanagh, Terrera and Panelo combined for four more goals, including Cavanagh’s third conversion to take an 8-2 lead at the half.

Following a scoreless fifth, de Vicuña struck on back-to-back goals to bring La Esquina within four. Adjusting to the defensive style of play in the latter stages of the match, Cria La Dolfina managed one goal on nine shots, but a final conversion from Cavanagh was all Cria La Dolfina needed to claim the 9-5 victory and Termas de Río Hondo Cup.

Reconvening on Field 1, Facundo F. Llorente kicked off the scoring for La Irenita Clinova, but Ellerstina soon took firm control of the half, led by the efforts of 10-goaler Facundo Pieres. Scoring seven goals on eleven shots, Ellerstina’s potent offensive was complimented by two conversions from Facundo to stifle La Irenita Clinova 7-1 at the break.

Opening the second half in the same manner as the first, Facundo F. Llorente was back on the scoreboard, as La Irenita Clinova attempted to pull themselves back into contention. Making a push in the sixth, Bayugar stepped up to the line twice with Strada complimenting La Irenita Clinova’s bid from the field. Still holding a firm ten-goal lead, Ellerstina dialed up the pressure once more, as La Irenita Clinova’s foul troubles sent sharpshooter Facundo Pieres to the line for three successful conversions. Trading goals in the final chukka of play, two from Bayugar wasn’t enough to for La Irenita Clinova to overcome their first half deficit, as Gonzalo Pieres sealed Ellerstina’s impressive debut 16-8 to earn the Centralab Cup.
