England to face South America at Chestertons Polo in the Park

England will face an all-South American team sponsored by Air Europa for the International Polo Match, due to take place on the opening day of this year’s Chestertons Polo in the Park on Friday 5th June.

The game between England and South America marks a poignant moment in sporting history as it will be the first time an international match has been played at Hurlingham Park, Fulham since 1939. England has had a long associated sporting rivalry with South Americans when it comes to polo so this match promises to be fiercely competitive. South American countries have dominated the Polo World Championships since they started in 1987 and all the current top 10 ranked players in the world are either from Argentina or Uruguay.

England International player, George Meyrick said: “This will be undoubtedly a fantastic match. The South American side will be made up of some seriously strong players. However, an England Team in front of a home crowd should never be underestimated. It’s going to be one of the highlight polo matches of this season.”

Now in its seventh year, Chestertons Polo in the Park brings world class polo right into the heart of London. With its simplified rules and smaller playing field, it has taken polo to a brand new audience and has now firmly established its place in London’s sporting summer calendar. The international game will be played in a similar format to the rest of the tournament, whereby each team is made up of three players (rather than the usual four) and they only change ends once at half time.

Air Europa, the award winning Latin American specialist airline serving more than 40 destinations across Europe and the Americas, will be sponsoring at Chestertons Polo in the Park for the second year running, having sponsored ‘Team Buenos Aires’ in 2014. The South American team will be flown to London by Air Europa, especially to take on the England Team at Chestertons Polo in the Park.

Managing Director of Chestertons Polo in the Park, Rory Heron said: “We are delighted to have secured a South American team to play England and it is fantastic to get Air Europa on board to sponsor them. I’m certain that spectators are going to be gripped by what promises to be a thrilling match.”
