Final plans revealed for three day polo festival

Final details have been unveiled for a packed programme of beach entertainment at GWR Polo on the Beach from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 June 2015.

Some of England’s top polo players are confirmed to play at the ninth edition of the event, which is expected to attract over 10,000 spectators to Watergate Bay, Cornwall.

Free to attend, the event is supported by headline sponsor Great Western Railway. Now in its ninth year, the UK’s original beach polo festival includes three high-goal matches, Segway polo, equestrian stunt displays, Sunday dog show, and delicious food and drink.

Jamie Anderson, campaigns manager for Great Western Railway, said: “To celebrate our five year partnership with Polo on the Beach, we’re bringing more activities than ever before to this year’s pop-up entertainment village on the sand.

“Spectators can expect our giant touring colouring mural for children, traditional fairground games: hook-a-duck, coconut shy, sand sculptures and the GWR Horse & Carriage bar.”

Attracting some of the biggest names in British polo, the event draws together a stellar assembly of players. Andy Burgess, who has played for polo clubs in the UK and abroad, has been part of Polo on the Beach since 2007.

He said: “Our players are all current or ex-England internationals. Many players who are booked to play this year have played in previous years, such as Tim Vaux, Richard and Andrew Blake Thomas, and Caspar West who is manager of Beaufort Polo Club.

“The beach at Watergate Bay, with the amphitheatre of the cliffs on one side and the sea behind you, is quite special and you don’t really get to play polo anywhere quite like it.”

Alongside three polo matches, the team at Watergate Bay Hotel has announced completely new elements for 2015: slacklining, sand art, Kids Zone crafts, Watergate Bay Surf Lifesaving Club rescue drills and a family charity dog show.

The GWR Polo on the Beach Party debuts on Saturday 27 June. Live bands, including beat box masters Duke, perform from 7pm in the party arena. Hed Kandi’s international DJ Krystal Roxx, who has toured with rap star Taio Cruz, will take to the decks for the headline slot. Tickets for the party are priced at £20 and are available from www.watergatebay.co.uk/polo.

Food and drink is available throughout the weekend from the GWR ‘Horse & Carriage’ bar, Airstream Champagne bar, Bath Gin bar, and street food stalls including Craftworks Kitchen and the Cornish Curry Company.

Contemporary British lifestyle brand Joules, will once again be this year’s team sponsor. Tom Joule, founder and CEO said: “We’re thrilled to be back at Watergate Bay for the fantastic Polo on the Beach. As team sponsor of the flagship Watergate Bay Trophy match, we’ve had the pleasure of designing the players’ official polo shirts, and will be there all weekend fundraising for a worthwhile cause with our much-loved ‘Welly Wanging’.

“This year we’ll be raising funds in aid of a charity we’ve worked with for many years, The Gurkha Welfare Trust, to help with their relief effort following the recent earthquake disaster in Nepal.”

Spectators can purchase their own shirt from the Joules range designed exclusively for Polo on the Beach at Watergate Bay from the pop-up shop at the event.
