Great Oaks Runs Over Certified, 14-11, in Two Oaks Cup

Tomas Garcia del Rio scored seven of his game-high nine goals on penalty shots as Great Oaks pummeled Certified 14-11 in Two Trees Cup competition at the Bridgehampton Polo Club Sunday afternoon.


Gonzalo Garcia del Rio scored the first goal of the game, but brother Tomas responded with three straight penalty conversions to give Great Oaks an early 3-1 lead.


Second chukker goals from Tomas Garcia del Rio and Marcos Garcia del Rio gave Great Oaks five goals while holding Certified to a single goal from Inaki Laprida.  Great Oaks extended its lead to 5-2.


Great Oaks stepped it up a notch in the third, with Dillon Bacon scoring twice from the field while Tomas Garcia del Rio added a penalty goal and a field goal. 


Gonzalo Garcia del Rio and Nic Roldan scored single goals as Great Oaks rested upon a 9-4 halftime lead.


Roldan added two more goals in the fourth, but single goals from Marcos and Tomas Garcia del Rio maintained the five goal lead, as they left the field with an 11-6 advantage.


Certified’s most productive offense of the match came in the fifth chukker, getting three goals from Roldan and a single field goal from Laprida.  Tomas Garcia del Rio scored a single penalty goal to keep Great Oaks on top, 12-10, as Certified pressed to get back into the game.


Certified struggled to break through the Great Oaks defense in the final period of play, but it was not to be. 


Pablo Pieres scored his first goal of the day for Great Oaks while Tomas Garcia del Rio tallied his ninth score of the afternoon.  A single penalty goal from Gonzalo Garcia del Rio was all that Certified could muster, as Great Oaks rode off with the 14-11 victory.


Tomas Garcia del Rio led all scoring with nine goals, seven of them on penalty shots.  Bacon and Marcos Garcia del Rio scored two goals apiece and Pablo Pieres added a single goal in the win.


Roldan scored six times for Certified.  Gonzalo Garcia del Rio added three goals and Laprida scored twice in the loss.
