HORSES IN THE HALL

HORSES IN THE HALL

As any polo player will tell you, if you don’t have a great horse to get you to the ball, you can’t play great polo. In recognition of their supreme contribution to the sport, in 2000 “Horses to Remember” was added to the Museum of Polo’s Hall of Fame to honor the equine heroes of polo. Since then 25 polo ponies have been inducted. Each pony inducted has been painted by Melinda Brewer, an artist well known in equestrian circles, best known for her sensitive watercolor portraits.

Recognized as one of Canada’s foremost animal painters, Melinda Brewer has been painting professionally since 1982. Her earlier artwork subjects were mostly wildlife and she quickly gained recognition from the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Wildlife Habitat Canada, World Wildlife Fund and was twice awarded National Artist by Ducks Unlimited Canada.

Since 1992, her body of work has reflected her first passion – the horse. In that time she has completed over two hundred commissioned portraits of her favorite subject – the polo pony.

Her polo art has been exhibited at numerous venues including the American Academy of Equine Art, the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Thoroughbred Racing Museum in Aiken and a permanent exhibition of Best Playing Pony portraits at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Featured here are works from the permanent exhibition, Horses to Remember, at the National Museum of Polo, that also includes an informative “Push and Play” exhibit featuring additional information and photos of each of our amazing four-footed inductees.

The Museum of Polo is a 501(c) 3, not-for-profit organization. It is open Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and in polo season on Saturdays also, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated.
