Dynamic Duo Leads Colorado to Victory
Playing his first game in the 2018 Joe Barry Cup, 9-goaler Diego Cavanagh joined Juan Britos, creating a formidable duo that was able to lead Colorado to the 12-10 victory. Combining for 11 of the team’s 12 goals, Cavanagh and Britos were effective throughout the game running to goal as Goose Creek found themselves trying to contain the fast pace set by Colorado. After Mariano Gonzalez converted his first of four penalty shots for the game, the game turned into a series of runs as Colorado responded by scoring six consecutive goals to build an early 7-2 lead. Before the half was through, Mariano Gonzalez added two more penalty 4 conversions to bring Goose Creek within three goals, trailing 7-4 at halftime.
Just as Colorado had done in the 2nd and 3rd chukkas, Goose Creek scored six consecutive goals in the second half, turning a four-goal deficit into a two-goal advantage with just six minutes remaining in the game. Thanks to the work of Peke Gonzalez and Matias Magrini running to goal, Goose found themselves in a good position, but the momentum quickly turned as Colorado once again answered with a run of their own. Cavanagh led the way, scoring directly from the throw-in before quickly following it up with a penalty 2 conversion to tie the game at 10-10. The 9-goaler wasn’t finished as a penalty 4 attempt was hit in by Santino Magrini, restoring the Colorado lead. With time running out, Cavanagh hit a cut shot from a tough angle that found its way through the goal posts for his eighth goal of the game, sending Colorado to the 12-10 victory.
Postage Stamp Farm made their debut in the Joe Barry Cup, falling just short to Modere 13-12 in the opening game of the day. Led by a balanced offensive effort with Hilario Ulloa, Agustin Obregon and Jared Zenni all scoring four goals each, Modere was able to overcome their foul troubles to escape with the narrow one goal victory. In a close contest throughout, Modere was able to maintain their lead throughout the game with effective 11 for 15 (73%) shooting from the field, despite committing twice as many fouls as Postage Stamp Farm.
Two collisions late in the game saw both Mariano Aguerre and Christian Weisz, playing in place of Annabelle Gundlach, get knocked off their horses and create penalty opportunities for Postage Stamp Farm. Provided with seven penalty shots in the game, Postage Stamp Farm was only able to convert four of those attempts, giving Modere the slight edge the needed to fight their way to victory. A game high seven goals from Kris Kampsen wasn’t enough as Modere improved to 2-0 in the Joe Barry Cup.
