Joe Barry Cup – Day 8

Goose Creek Scores 10 Straight Goals in Victory

In a must win game for both teams in the 2018 Joe Barry Cup, Goose Creek was able to defeat Postage Stamp Farm 12-7 behind a dominant 3rd and 4th chukka that saw them score 10 consecutive goals. In a fast-paced, low fouling game that saw just three penalty shots combined between both teams, it was Mariano Gonzalez that continued to lead the way for Goose Creek, shooting a perfect 100% from the field and penalty line.

Postage Stamp Farm looked strong in the opening two chukkas, with Kris Kampsen scoring two goals and Brandon Phillips adding one goal to build an early 3-1 lead. In good defensive position, Postage Stamp Farm held Goose Creek to zero shots in the 2nd chukka, but the game changed completely upon starting the 3rd chukka as Goose Creek took complete control of the game. Allowing Goose Creek to get in behind their defence, Postage Stamp Farm found themselves chasing the play in the 3rd chukka as a goal from Mariano Gonzalez was quickly followed by back-to-back goals from Peke Gonzalez as Goose Creek held their first lead of the game.

The run was only just beginning, as Goose Creek dominated possession through the end of the 4th chukka, scoring ten unanswered goals, with all four players finding the scoresheet. Shooting 8 for 9 from the field and 2 for 2 from the penalty line over that span, Goose Creek held a big 11-3 lead, taking advantage of Postage Stamp Farm’s missed opportunities around goal. Phillips tried to ignite a comeback for his team, scoring three more goals late in the game to shrink the deficit to four goals, but Goose Creek’s victory was never in doubt late in the game and was highlighted by a nice neckshot goal from Maureen Brennan to close out the 12-7 victory, bringing her team to a 2-1 record.

Group play in the 2018 Joe Barry Cup concludes this Sunday, January 21 as five games are scheduled, with all teams fighting for the four spots in next week’s semi-finals.
