Tianjin, China, 25 July 2013 – Metropolitan Intervarsity Polo 2013, which is being held from 23 to 28 July at Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club, sees representation from polo teams from the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, Harvard University and Yale University.

The Club hopes that the tournament will raise the awareness of polo amongst the region’s youth and widen the horizons of Chinese youth and allow them to experience the beautiful game of polo as well as instil in them the values being driven off the back of polo. To inspire and groom young people by promoting the sport of polo to the next generation has been the Club’s polo development initiative.

Metropolitan Intervarsity Polo 2013 also provides a convenient platform for academic, cultural and social exchanges among representatives from the four universities, local students, parents as well as alumni.

Yesterday was a tournament rest day that allowed the four teams time together to trek the Great Wall of China at Huangyaguan, a small section of the Great Wall located in the north of Tianjin Municipality. This very steep section of the Great Wall is an approximately two-hour drive from Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club. The picturesque background provided an excellent environment for the teams to interact as well as share insights and their appreciation for polo.

The second day of tournament saw teams from all four universities playing with great form. The bright sunshine of the Tianjin summer has bestowed good luck on the England teams who orchestrated play with great finesse. The first match of the day was the University of Cambridge vs Harvard University. Janie Amero scored the first goal of the match for Harvard University in the first chukka, the team continued to play with aggression, scoring two more beautiful goals in this first chukka.

The second match saw Yale University play the University of Oxford. George Allen scored the first and very magnificent goal for the University of Oxford within seconds of the first chukka. Yale University who did not quite impress the spectators on the first match day strived to perform better and fought hard to prove themselves. However, the English proved to be too strong a contender for the Americans with their excellent tactics and teamwork. With cheers and support from the crowd, Yale University scored their one and only goal in the final chukka, ending the 4-chukka match with a score of 10-1 with victory to the English.
