Stefano Marsaglia’s Piaget handed the titleholders, Lyndon Lea’s Zacara, their first defeat in the British Open Championship Sunday, beating them 9-7 in their league game for the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club.

Piaget held the lead throughout the game, scoring three goals in the opening chukka before Zacara pulled one back to end it 3-1 in Piaget’s favour. Scoring was equal in the second period that ended with Piaget 5-3 up. Piaget held Zacara scoreless in the third chukka and a goal by Christian Laprida left Piaget 6-3 ahead at halftime.

The fourth period saw Piaget increase their lead to 8-4. Zacara outscored Piaget in the fifth chukka, but Piaget retained the lead 9-6. Zacara denied Piaget any goals in the sixth and final chukka and scored one to leave Piaget the winners by two points at the final bell.

Laprida was high scorer for Piaget with four goals to his credit. Ignatius Du Plessis scored four for Zacara.

Meanwhile, Prince Bahar Jefri’s Richard Mille edged Will Johnston’s Coca-Cola 10-9 and Edouard Carmignac’s Talandracas downed Harald Link’s Thai Polo 12-10 in league matches.

After a day off Monday, league play in the British Open continues Tuesday when Enigma meet Salkeld.
