PortMayaca to meet Faraway in Haas Cup final

Port Mayaca beat Crab Orchard 12-11 in overtime whileFaraway ran away from Goose Creek 11 to 7 Thursday afternoon at theInternational Polo Club to earn invitations to Sunday morning’s Haas Cup 20-goalfinals (subsidiary of the Ylvisaker Cup).

Port Mayaca fell behind early but rallied to defeat apower-packed Crab Orchard lineup in sudden-death overtime in the 1pm contest.

The 19-goal Port Mayaca team received one goal by handicapfrom the 20-goal Crab Orchard entry for a 1-0 lead.  Matias Magrini put Crab Orchard on the scoreboardearly in the opening chukker to tie it up at 1-1.  Port Mayaca responded with a goal from the fieldfrom Marianito Obregon and Crab Orchard trailed 2-1.  A foul committed I n the Port Mayacagoalmouth resulted in a Penalty 1, which awarded Crab Orchard a free goal,2-2.  A penalty conversion by MarianoAguerre ended the first chukker with Crab Orchard defending a 3-2 advantage.

The two teams battled up and down the field in the secondperiod.  Magrini notched his second goalof the day, but Obregon answered back with a goal from Oregon.  At the end of the second chukker Crab Orchardheld on to their one goal lead, 4-3.

Consecutive goals from Aguerre (one from the field andone on a penalty conversion) had Crab Orchard in front, 6-3 before Port Mayacafired back.  Carlucho Arellano converteda penalty shot for a goal and Obregon added his third goal in as manychukkers.  At the end of the first halfCrab Orchard clung to a one goal, 6-5 lead.

A regrouped Port Mayaca team returned to the field in thefourth chukker, but it was Crab Orchard that scored first on a penaltyconversion from Magrini, 7-5.  StevieOrthwein and Carlucho Arellano each cashed in on a penalty shot for a goal totie it up at 7-7.   Stevie Orthwein added a final goal from thefield to end the chukker with Port Mayaca leading for the first time since theopening chukker with an 8-7 score.

A goal from Robert Orthwein extended the Port Mayaca leadto two goals, 9-7 in the fifth period when Crab Orchard rattled its sabers onceagain.  A pair of penalty goals from FelipeViana and a goal from Aguerre had Crab Orchard up, 10-9.  A penalty goal from Arellano closed out thechukker in a 10-10 deadlock.

Arellano scored the first goal of the sixth chukker foran 11-10 lead, but Crab Orchard wasn’t going to concede anything.  With 2:25 on the clock, Aguerre scored hisfifth goal of the game to knot it up at 11-11 and force sudden-death overtime.

After a brief recess both teams returned to the field onfresh mounts.  Port Mayaca took earlycontrol of the ball and drove toward the Crab Orchard goal.  Seven-goaler Marianito Obregon drove the ballthrough the goal posts for the 12-11 victory.

Arellano and Obregon scored four goals apiece for thewin.  Stevie Orthwein added two goals andRobert Orthwein scored once.  The teamreceived one goal by handicap.  Aguerreled the Crab Orchard attack with five goals. Magrini was credited with three goals and Viana added two penalty goalsin the loss.  Crab Orchard also receivedone goal on a Penalty 1.

FARAWAY11, GOOSE CREEK 7

The second Haas Cup semifinal of the day had Faraway scoringa solid 11-7 win over a makeshift Goose Creek team that was forced to replaceone of its players in the second chukker.

A stagnant first chukker saw only one goal scored byGoose Creek’s Luis Escobar for a 2-0 lead (Goose Creek received one goal onhandicap from the 20-goal Faraway foursome).

An injury to Goose Creek 5-goaler Cote Zegers brought6-goaler Gringo Colombres to the lineup, forfeiting the aforementioned goal onhandicap.  Pelon Escapite tied it up at1-1 on a penalty shot, but Escobar put Goose Creek back in front, 2-1, with hissecond goal of the game.  Santiago Chavannescored the final goal of the chukker to leave it all even at 2-2.

Third period action had Faraway team captain Hutton Goodmanconvert a penalty shot for a go-ahead goal, 3-2.  Teammate Santiago Chavanne scored his secondgoal of the game for a 4-2 edge when Goodman got on a roll.  Within the span of less than two minutesGoodman added two more goals from the field, including a well-executed 70-yard shotthrough the goal posts for a 6-2 edge. Chavanne added the icing to the cake with his second goal of the chukkerfor a commanding five goal, 7-2 halftime advantage.

Colombres (filling in for the injured Zegers) scored on a60-yard neck-shot for Goose Creek in the fourth period, followed by a goal fromthe field from Chavanne.  Faraway heldits five goal lead, 8-3.

The fifth chukker belonged to Goose Creek as they shutout the Faraway attack and picked up a pair of goals from 6-goaler Tano Vial.  A penalty conversion followed by awell-placed backhander cut the Faraway to three goals, 8-5.

Chavanne opened the final chukker with a gal from thefield followed by a penalty conversion from Escapite for a 10-5 lead.  Goodman scored his fourth goal of the gamebefore goal by Goose Creek’s Maureen Brennan and Escobar ended the game withFaraway riding off with the 11-7 win and a date in the Haas Cup finals withPort Mayaca at 10am Sunday morning.

Chavanne scored five times for Faraway.  Goodman accounted for four goals and Escapitescored twice.  Escobar registered three goalsfor Goose Creek.  Teammates Colombres andVial added two goals apiece in the loss.
