Queens Cup – 23/05/09

Talandracas victorious, despite being a man down in the third chukka.

By Antje Derks

Today’s match between Les Lions II and Talandracas was not the most pleasant match to watch. Les Lions II spent much of their time arguing with the umpires, resulting in endless whistles and technical penalties. Unfortunately, the situation came to a head between the two teams in the third chukka, when Talandracas’ Alejandro Agote was excluded for spitting at sixteen-year-old Chris MacKenzie. It is behaviour that the umpires would not tolerate, despite being quite out of character for Alejandro.

After the match, Robert Graham explained the next step: “We will look at the footage this evening and decide if this matter should be taken further”. The incident may or may not lead to a disciplinary at either club or a higher level.

Aside from the unpleasantries, both teams showed some spurts of magical polo. Lucas Monteverde, Guillermo Terrera and Agote worked well as a team, pushing Talandracas in front by five goals (11-6) at the end of the fifth chukka. The game looked to be all over, but Sebastian Merlos pulled back four goals, almost single-handedly.  He looked as if he was going to equalise right on the bell, but over ran slightly, sending the ball wide. The final scores: Talandracas 11, Les Lions II 10.
