Sarsin Swiss Open–Zurich

Sarasin Swiss Open Polo Championships 2009 in Zurich

Equal Strengths Assure Suspense

Like last year, this year’s edition of the Sarasin Swiss Open Polo Championships benefited

from perfect weather. Lots of sunshine and pleasant temperatures reigned while the six top

ranking teams gave exciting duels with balanced scores. The tournament also glamorously

celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Each year at the end of August, a selection of the world’s finest polo players assemble at the Polo

Park Zürich to demonstrate their skills at the Sarasin Swiss Open Polo Championships, and to

collect scoring points for their world ranking. In addition to several 6 and 7 goalers, the organisers

succeeded in gaining the Argentinean professional players Pablo Jauretche, Augustin Garcia-

Grossi, Alejandro Agote and Alejandro Diaz Alberdi with handicaps of 8. The teams were also able

to count on players from Switzerland, Germany and Great Britain, so that all six teams featured

team handicaps of 14 to 15 points.

The All Star Game

At the traditional All Star Game on Thursday evening, spectators experienced polo at it’s finest as

the crème de la crème of Argentinean professional players gathered for the game: together, the

high goalers facing each other in the Gamma and Blasto teams achieved astounding team

handicaps of 30. The eight players fascinated polo experts and laymen alike in two chukkas.

Alejandro Diaz Alberdi stood out, having already participated in the Argentinean Open 15 times

and reached the finals 5 times. Santiago de Estrada and Pepe Riglos demonstrated unique team

play in the Gamma team. The game ended in a tie at 2/2.

The Gräff Capital team and BMW team faced each other in the small finale, and the Sarasin team

and Beyer team competed for the coveted Sarasin Trophy, which finally went to the Beyer team

after a hard-fought finale. The BMW team was the victor of the small finale, coming third place. In

all semi finales and finales, the numerous spectators enjoyed thrilling scenes which at times were

reminiscent of acrobatics, and which showed perfect tactical team play with precise passes.
