SHANGHAI TANG WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL POLO TOURNAMENT

Singapore, Thursday 3 September 2009 – The Shanghai Tang Women’s International Polo 2009 tournament commenced with the Silver League yesterday at the Singapore Polo Club. This prestigious 5-day tournament consists of the Silver League (-2 to 0 goals handicap) and a Gold Cup match (0 to 2 goals handicap). Foreign professionals from Zimbabwe, New Zealand and the United Kingdom were invited to participate in this annual tournament. In addition, the Singapore Polo Club has also invited representatives from the Ham Polo Club/England* to compete against Team Singapore* for the coveted Gold Cup title; to be played on Sunday 6 September.


 


The Silver League features four teams: China Blue, The Margaritas, Amarula and Pink Champagne playing preliminary rounds on Wednesday 2 September, followed by Semi-final games scheduled on Thursday & Friday, 3 & 4 September. The Silver League Final will be played on Saturday 5 September from 4:30pm.


 


During preliminary round play yesterday, the score was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation between China Blue and The Margaritas. Emma Calder (New Zealand), team captain of China Blue and team-mate, Caroline Link each scored 2 goals. The match moved to a “sudden-death” penalty shootout that was won by China Blue, with Caroline Link scoring the winning goal. In the second preliminary match, Pink Champagne defeated Amarula 4-3. The Silver League continues today (Thursday 3 September) with the first Semi- final between China Blue and Amarula. The second Semi-final will be played tomorrow (Friday 4 September) and will feature The Margaritas versus Pink Champagne. The winning teams will advance to the Silver League Final to be played on Saturday 5 September.


 


The highlight of the tournament will be the Gold Cup match (0 to 2 goals handicap) which is scheduled on Sunday 6 September with representative teams from Singapore* and HPC England*. The Singapore Polo Club is honoured to have Mr. S Iswaran, Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Education as the Guest-of-Honour at the Gold Cup match. The schedule of eventsLive also includes a fashion showcase by Shanghai Tang, featuring their 2009 Autumn/Winter collection, Kaleidoscope. A Ladies Best Hat Award will also be presented, with the winner receiving a unique Shanghai Tang Duffle Bag valued at over S$400.
