Barrington received one goal by handicap from the 20-goal Pony Express team, and looked like anything but the Monty Waterbury championship team of just three days ago as it opened play in its opening round of the 2009 USPA Silver Cup Wednesday afternoon.

Three goals from Argentine 7-goaler Tomas Goti and a single penalty conversion from Pablo Avalos had Pony Express up 4-1 after the first chukker, and on top 6-3 after the second.

On the strength of two goals apiece from Tommy Biddle and Antonio Galvan, Barrington managed to work its way back into the competition, but continued to trail 7-5 at the end of the first half.

“I was pressing a little too much in the first chukker,” said Biddle, “and I think we all came out a little flat after our last game.  We decided at halftime that I needed to slow down a bit and let Julio (Arellano) go forward more, and it started working for us.”

Barrington team captain Barb Uskup scored the opening goal of the fourth chukker, cutting the Pony Express lead to a single goal, 7-6, before a Goti penalty conversion stretched the lead back to two, 8-6.  Two consecutive goals from Julio Arellano, however tied it up at 8-8 to end the period.

Biddle opened the fifth chukker with two straight goals from the field followed by a single goal from Arellano as Barrington took an 11-8 lead.  Matias Magrini converted a penalty shot, with Biddle returning the favor for Barrington.  Avalos ended the scoring in the chukker with a goal from the field, and Pony Express left the field trailing Barrington 12-10.

Goti drew first blood in the sixth chukker with a goal from the field, but Barrington was just getting started.  Disciplined defense and three straight goals carried Barrington to a convincing 15-11 win.

Biddle scored six times for Barrington.  Teammate Antonio Galvan added four goals; Julio Arellano scored three times and Barb Uskup added a goal in the win.

“The chemistry on this team (Barrington) is just amazing,” said Biddle.  “And Julio (Arellano) is a winner.  I know that if the chips are down we’ll look at one another and say ‘now we’re gonna go’, and we’ll do it.”

Tomas Goti set the pace for Pony Express with six goals.  Teammates Matias Magrini and Pablo Avalos added two goals apiece.

Silver Cup play continues on Thursday, October 8th with Goose Creek meeting Bendabout in a

4 pm contest.  Barrington returns to action on Sunday, October 11th in an 11 am match against Bendabout.
