2009 Queens Cup entries

Strong entry for Harcourt Developments Queen’s Cup

Guards Polo Club has announced that 18 teams have entered this year’s Harcourt Developments Queen’s Cup tournament. Matches begin on the 19 May and teams will battle for three weeks hoping for a place in the final on Sunday, 14 June, which is traditionally held in the presence of HM The Queen. Teams will know who they are up against in the league during The President’s Draw, which will be held in the Clubhouse at Guards Polo Club on Tuesday 12 May.

There are a couple of new names on the teamsheet including Rashid Al Habtoor and his Habtoor polo team, featuring Piki Alberdi, and Nick Clarke’s Salkeld. Of course there are some very familiar names too such as  Joachim and Max Gottschalk’s Les Lions teams featuring two Heguys in Les Lions l and two Merlos’ in Les Lions ll. Eduardo and Javier Novillo Astrada have teamed up with Lyndon Lea in Zacara, while Ali Albwardy will once again be fielding Adolfo Cambiaso in his Dubai team, this year playing alongside Christian Laprida.

Although the current holders of the Queen’s Cup, Ellerston will not be defending their title this year, high-goal fans are not to be denied the opportunity to watch the Pieres brothers. They will be in action for Jean-Francois Decaux and his La Bamba de Areco team (formerly known as Brittany). Some other teams have had a name change too. Adrian Kirby will be playing under Ravensbourne banner this year, while Lovelocks, is to be known as El Remanso. The Hanbury family team has called on George to play for this squad in 09 as his brother Charlie is a member of the Apes Hill team, playing alongside England captain Luke Tomlinson.

Guards Polo Club was delighted earlier in the year to announce that Harcourt Developments has become the new sponsor of The Queen’s Cup. The award-winning property development, management and investment company has a broad portfolio of international projects, which include the impressive Park West in Dublin, Ireland’s largest business park; the five-star Wyndham Grand Hotel in Chelsea, London, the waterside regeneration project at the Esplanade Quarter in Jersey, and the Carlisle Bay Hotel, Antigua, Tatler Travel Guide’s Hotel of the Year.
