By Herbert Spencer

The new Piaget polo team came from behind to win 11-10 over Spencer McCarthy’s Emlor in the last seconds of their Queen’s Cup match at Guards Polo Club Saturday (22 May).

Piaget’s victory came just before the final bell when their Stefano Marsaglia converted a spot penalty just 10 yards from the goal.

With Piaget at 22 goals against Emlor’s 21, the latter started the match with a point on the scoreboard. Then Emlor outscored Piaget throughout the first three chukkas and led 7-4 at half-time.

Piaget rallied in the second half and had reduced their deficit to just a goal by the end of the fifth period, then drew even in the sixth. The game looked like going into extra time before Emlor fouled in the goal mouth and Marsaglia tapped in the winner.

Brothers Bautista and Marcos Heguy were the high scorers for Piaget with five and three goals respectively.

In an earlier match at Great Trippetts in West Sussex, Jean-Francois Decaux’s La Bamba de Areco squeeked by Alfio Marchini’s Loro Piana to win 11-10. This match featured three of the five 10-goal players in the tournament: Gonzalito and Facundo Pieres for La Bamba and Juan Martin Nero for Loro Piana.
